Vanilla Chai Tea Made Simple

Ingredients:

Low Fat Milk
Water
2 Tazo Chai Tea Bags (found at Publix)
Vanilla Extract
2 packets of Splenda (optional)

Instructions
1. Bring the mixture of 1/4 cup of low-fat milk and 3/4 water to a boil, add 2-3 tea bags and let simmer for 2-4 mins.

2. Once the heat reduces, add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and stir for another 2-4 mins.

3. Pour the chai tea over ice and refrigerate. Once cooled, add 2 small bags of Splenda. Enjoy!

Frustrated with the harsh nutrition facts of my favorite drink from Starbucks, the Iced Vanilla Chai Tea, I decided to devised a recipe that was 1/5 the calorie and sugar content. Surprisingly Vanilla Chai Tea at Starbucks has 180 calories with 31g of sugar in a TALL size! (From the official Starbucks website) The homemade tea I now drink is 36 calories solely from the low-fat milk used! During my second period journalism class, I had a total of six students try the Starbucks drink and the homemade drink side by side; they ALL claimed “they tasted the same.” Sophomore Hannah Mae Harding exclaimed, “They both taste [so] good, but I would be willing to make some instead of spending money on something that isn’t healthy.” Rachel Akram “feel[s] so healthy drinking the homemade one!” All the students who participated said they actually preferred the homemade drink and are willing to try it at home themselves! Many students here at Viera are always striving for ways to slim their wallets and waistlines. This simple substitute is delicious, easy, and a healthier choice! Drink up Viera!
