Trying to repair your reputation from your past obsession with Justin Bieber, or simply trying to branch out and find some new tunes? Well, I’ve got the perfect fix for you. There’s a stellar up and coming band called ‘5 Seconds of Summer’ or 5SOS for short, that has a rad pop punk vibe, and an all-around rockin’ aura.
Formed in Sydney, Australia, 5SOS consists of four best friends; front man, Luke Hemmings, guitarist, Michael Clifford, bassist, Calum Hood, and drummer, Ashton Irwin. The boys met in grade school, and officially became a band in 2011. Using the power of YouTube, the group posted several videos of themselves covering popular songs including, ‘The A Team’ by Ed Sheeran, and Wheatus’ smash hit ‘Teenage Dirtbag’. Little did anyone know, those covers would kick-start their careers, and send them on an electrifying rollercoaster ride of events.
The boys have been around the block a few times, over the past two years, due to their touring schedule being quite hectic. In June of 2012, 5 Seconds of Summer embarked on a mini tour called ‘The 2012 Tour’, hitting up a few major cities around Australia. Later that year, in October, they were asked to open a few shows for Hot Chelle Rae and Cher Lloyd on the ‘Whatever World Tour’. In late 2012, One Direction member, Louis Tomlinson, stumbled upon one of their original songs, ‘Gotta Get Out’, on YouTube; one tweet later, the views skyrocketed, and before we knew it, the group was set to accompany 1D on their ‘Take Me Home’ stadium, world tour. 5SOS is about to set off on another mini tour around Europe; this tour may be short, but it is chaotic, none the less, as the name of the journey notes that they will be traveling to ‘Five Countries in Five Days’. Immediately after, they will head to the states to begin their first headlining tour around America and Canada, appropriately naming it the ‘Stars, Stripes, and Maple Syrup Tour’. The ‘Take Me Home’ tour, with One Direction, was such a success, the boys were asked to open for 1D again on the American and Canadian leg of the ‘Where We Are’ stadium tour.
5 Seconds of Summer is well on their way to success. Already accumulating over 9 million Twitter followers, the boys have quite a substantial, dedicated, fan base, which they call the ‘5SOS Family’. They are expected to release their second EP, ‘She Looks So Perfect’, on April 1st. This EP is produced by John Feldman, and includes songs they wrote over the summer with Alex Gaskarth, of All Time Low, as well as Joel and Benji Madden, of Good Charlotte.
When asked about 5 Seconds of Summer, Dayana Westhaver had this to say, “They’re not fake, and the music they create is meaningful. A band with attractive guys, and a sound that is different from everything you hear all over the radio, is awesome. I would definitely recommend them to anyone, because after you listen to them you’ll fall in love.” Laura Difilippi added, “They are FAB! They’re not trying to be like the Justin Bieber role, they’re actually a great pop rock band, and their music is just a good time.”
This punk rock band is, without a doubt, climbing up the ladder of stardom. Keep an eye out for these boys, they’ll be the next big thing, before you know it.
